Lovely, Lovely Spanish Trousseau

I love Trousseau.

It was love at first sip when I first encountered it 15-20 years ago, right when the Jura started to really be a thing here in the US.

And then we had the re-discovery of Trousseau vineyards from producers on the West Coast...which I also found very compelling and delicious.

So, when I first tasted today's wine, the Bastarda from Fedellos de Cuoto in Galicia, it was another 'love at first sip' scenario...and the haunting, ethereal, delicate red fruit and earthy transparency seemed awfully familiar...

...and then I learned that the grape it's 90% comprised of - known locally as Bastarda - is Trousseau.

But Trousseau from Ribeira Sacra has a slightly different personality than it does in its home zone of the Jura.

With its warmer climate and steep, rocky, terraced vineyards, Ribeira Sacra yields a different iteration of Trousseau- one that has a bit more heft and a much more firmly mineral core to it...

...and, of course, it has a more herbaceous Galician accent to it, as well.

We don't get much of this stunningly elegant, mineral and subtly complex red wine, that's just so perfect for this exact time of year...

...but when we do, I get excited...

...and I'm excited.
