Two Red Burgundies

Two Red Burgs...

...both of which are drinking very nicely right now...

...and both of which are under $50.

That was probably most of what you needed to hear to grab your attention, but seriously...

...it's the time of year when a nice glass of ultra-classic Pinot Noir is the perfect 'welcome home' from a long weekend day of errands and duties and sports practices and school functions, etc.

As a matter of fact, making it home before 4pm on a Saturday, with nothing else to really do besides figure out dinner, find a spot on the couch and check in on the football scores is pretty darned good...

...unless you know you have a bottle of drink-now reg Burg waiting to have its cork pulled...

...that's about as good as a non-vacation day gets.

I mean, for me, at least...

TWO RED BURGS

GABIN et FÉLIX RICHOUX Irancy Les Cailles 2017 - in the Northerly appellation of Iracy, the Richoux estate is legendary.  In the newsletter of MCF, Richoux has long been a favorite.  I simply love their ultra-traditional style, one that's marked by a somewhat stern, yet also highly expressive and charming disposition.  From the classically structured 2017 vintage, this Irancy Les Cailles, from their most clay-rich site, shows near perfect tension between the delightfully earthy, aromatic dark fruit and the surly, mineral-packed backbone so signature to Irancy.  It's really delicious now, but'll last another 5-7 easy, should you choose to keep your hands off.

J & J ARCHAMBAUD Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Aux Defois 2020 - this is actually the second time this wine (in this vintage) has been in the newsletter.  True story.  The reason I'm highlighting it again, though, is because it was one of those happy discoveries that suppliers sometimes make in their warehouses...of a wine that was really good two years ago, and they thought was sold out.  When they make the happy discovery, though, said wine is now two years better, having sat, untouched, in perfect conditions.  Archambaud's Hautes Côtes Defois is a fabulously darkly-pitched wine, with beautiful, rich, earthy fruits, a stony core and just a kiss of the exotic, Vosne-esque spice to it.  The two years in hiding has really allowed the nuance to blossom, and there's no end in site!
